You know that shit about institutional ptsd being worse and less useful than the homeless kind?  Well, now having experienced a bit of both - can 100% agree.

Shit learned from (semi) homelessness (and being housebound in a non-institutional way)-
How to call cabs and uber
(drivers can make good friends)
when to call one
How to use a computer in good ways and in moderation
new ways to get food
The uses of free condiment packets
takeout/delivery can be very useful
Sleep and shelter

Shit learned from institutionalization -
Follow orders
Dissociation
Anhedonia
Dissociation
How to use a computer to dissociate
Traumatizing yourself more even after you get out due to being afraid of yourself
How to not take care of yourself
Anorexia
Dissociation

hmmmmm.....

Sounds about right. Human bodies learn to do what it takes to survive moment to moment in a given environment, and if the answer is 'be miserable but do things' or 'be miserable and helpless' they learn that.

Dude we were reading about learned helplessness caused by institutionalization *yesterday*

"how to use a computer to dissociate" is literally janusz

he's never been in an institution thankfully but he's afraid of going to one for this reason. he already has learned helplessness he doesn't need more of it.
